Currently, in education, both quantitative and qualitative research are used. Overgeneralizing slightly, I believe that research for degrees tends to be qualitative (because of practicality of small samples), while contracted research (e.g. by government agencies) tends to be quantitative because they are looking for ‘proof’ of success or failure with respect to some initiative.
