6 March 2017: Call for participants in the 2017 International Mathematical Modelling Challenge

Kerri Spooner is New Zealand coordinator of the 2017 International Mathematical Modelling Challenge to be held over 13 March – 8 May. Each country can have up to two teams consisting of four enrolled secondary school students and one teacher/faculty advisor. The contest will begin in mid-March and end on early-May. During that time teams choose five consecutive days to work together on the problem. In anticipation of more than two teams wishing to participate, the nominated 5 consecutive working day period would need to be completed before 24th April 2017 to allow for selection of the top two teams to be put forward to represent New Zealand. All that is needed at this stage is an expression of interest  to Kerri Spooner kspooner@aut.ac.nz  by 3rd April 2017 from the teacher wishing to oversee a team from their school and nomination of  anticipated dates for five consecutive days your team will be working on the problem. This is a true team competition. Real problems require a mix of different kinds of mathematics for their analysis and solution. And real problems take time and teamwork. The IM2C provides students with a deeper experience both of how mathematics can explain our world and what working with mathematics looks like.
