Title: Deep Learning - A Case Study of Research-Led Teaching

Abstract: A research University usually has PhD programs and good records of research publications. With more new staff members joined our school recently, especially preparing for the forthcoming PBRF, research-led teaching has shown its significance than ever before. In this talk, our teaching experience will be shared with the new colleagues. Deep learning teaching will be applied as an instance to showcase how the research outcomes could be delivered to PG students. Meanwhile, we will discuss how our PG teaching could assist the undergoing research projects and publications as a return.

Bio: Dr Yan has experienced to be a lecturer, a senior lecturer and an associate Professor with the Auckland University of Technology (AUT). Recently he has given over 50 talks related to deep learning. With AUT, he has supervised over 150 UG students for the RnD Projects, 50 PG students including PhD students for their theses and project reports. He has published over 200 papers
including 80 journal articles. Before joined AUT, Dr Yan had had the working experience with the renowned Universities or research institutions of China, Singapore, US, and UK. Dr Yan is the director of AUT Center for Robotics & Vision (CeRV), a Fellow of the HEA (UK).
